The sites below allow you to learn and practice Data Science hands-on ... they also allow you to realistically assess your skills ;-)

If you don't like competitions, you might nevertheless like challenges, or just working on interesting datasets (there are plenty of them on those sites).

Be aware that incentives - including your own - are not the same when a site below is for-profit or not-for-profit.

         IEEE GRSS Data Fusion Contest
         fusion and analysis of multisource remote sensing data, starts in January

         InnoCentive
         broad set of challenges typically focusing on engineering problems (e.g. inventing new materials) rather than pure data science issues

         INRIA aerial image labelling contest
         continuous challenge, focus on automatic pixelwise labeling of aerial imagery

         Kaggle
         continuously new competitions (Google-owned since March 2017)

         annual 3 months contest, mid-March to mid-June

         object detection challenge on the largest existing dataset with object location annotations, April to September

         annual digital text forensics contests (plagiarism, author ID, profiling, obfuscation), January to June

         Paris Region AI challenge
         3 artificial intelligence challenges (health, industry, and citizen), each with a budget of around EUR 1.5 million

         crowd-sourced hedge fund, monthly contest, developing an algorithm (low beta, stable positive returns, avoiding large drawdowns)

         cooperative approach with code sharing, based in Paris-Saclay (France)

         annual geographic information system-focused algorithm competition, list of allowed tools, until August

         annual hackathon-like event in 3 rounds of several hours each, September

         focus on computer programming more generally rather than purely on data science

         Udacity-Facebook - PyTorch scholarship challenge
         learn a scholarship to learn how to build, train, and deploy state-of-the-art DL

         VAST Challenge - Visual Analytics Science and Technology
         annual contest (3 mini challenges, 1 grand challenge), submission in July

         VOT Challenge - Visual Object Tracking
         annual contest (April to May), results presented at ICCV or ECCV

         WMH Segmentation Challenge
         automatic segmentation of White Matter Hyperintensities, linked to MICCAI's brain lesion workshop

         YELP Dataset Challenge
         diverses challenges, for students: 10 awards of $5000

         participating universities send a four students team (max 2 PhD students) to a 3 days meeting to solve a problem, in April
